Canarios

Canarios is a dance written for baroque Spanish guitar by Gaspar Sanz in 1674. It was published as part of the Instrucción de música sobre la guitarra española. Francisco Bartolomé Sanz Celma (April 4, 1640 (baptized) – 1710), better known as Gaspar Sanz, studied music, theology and philosophy at the University of Salamanca and later became Professor of Music there. His music inspired twentieth-century composers Manuel de Falla, Joaquín Rodrigo and Peter Warlock.

Canarios (Canaries) is a typical Aragonese jota, full of rhythmic energy derived from its combination of 6/8 and 3/4 rhythms. This arrangement stays melodically true to Sanz’s original but has a few twists and turns in the setting which give it lots of colour and interest.
