Johann Sebastian Bach (1685 – 1750) wrote his Sonata in E-flat major for flute or recorder and harpsichord - BWV 1031 (Bach-Werke-Verzeichnis – the catalogue of Bach’s works) during his time as the conductor of the court orchestra in Cöthen (from 1717 to 1723). It was composed for the French flautist Pierre-Gabriel Buffardin (1690-1768).
This Siciliano is a particularly beautiful example of this type of Italian dance which is usually in a minor key and in 6/8 time with the characteristic rhythmic figure of dotted quaver, semiquaver, quaver. It has been re-cast in various forms including as a piano solo, but this version shares the melodic lines out amongst the band.
