The Dancing Lady was originally written as the last movement of Sands of Time, a piece commissioned by the High Wycombe Music Centre for its clarinet choir. It gave me a chance to indulge my fondness for Latin rhythms. It converted easily to this full band version. The piece is not hugely difficult technically, but the layers of rhythmic figures need to be played with security and the appropriate feel, which is more important in performance than too fast a tempo. The conductor should feel free to add appropriate Latin percussion, as long as it does not overbalance the rest of the band!
